Front axle-stub.

MessageAuthor

Hi. Some of you will have seen my 'wheel-bearing saga' over on the RWD forum. If not here it is: On the last entry. I've asked if the stub-axle can be removed to put onto another strut-tube. Also asked if anyone knows how to correct a 'flat' bit on the threaded part of the strut-tube. If you have time to read through, any advice is welcome:thumbs_up: as my poor old 240 is now entering it's 4th week of being out of service:broken_heart: Thanks.

The axle stub is shrunk and welded on the tube I think, just to make sure it stays there. Leave it. I would take a nice blunt piece of French oak and hammer the tube-opening in shape again. If it bends in the mail surely you can unbend it enough to get the big nut in. Maybe you can exchange the disk/cup/plate that the spring rests on, this one looks a bit rusty.

Thanks for that. Got plenty of French oak about the place. I'll give that a go I reckon. Being novicy' I did'nt really know what to use. As for the spring plate bit, that is a fixed piece also. The rust is only 'surface rust' the whole thing is solid & from a known source. I'm gonna wire brush it & then slap some 'rust-cure' stuff on it.

Right, to cut a long story short (ish LOL) I made another 'tour' of local garages today. After 5 or so, "sorry but no's" I found a garage that doe's repairs to HGVS. I've left the old & replacement struts with them. They 'think' thay may be able to swap the spring & shock over for me (cos I'm stumped). When I showed them the dented tube. it was a lot of 'sucking & blowing' through gritted teeth, 5 or 6 'Gallic shrugs' followed by, "leave it with us". Still waiting with everything crossed!
