Tiger and 6.9.2 troubleshooting issue

MessageAuthor

I have a trouble shooting question for trouble shooting savy PT users. After updating the OS to 10.4.2 and then to 6.9.2cs2, we experienced the following that even 2 rounds with the helpful crew at Digi tech support can not solve: Everything works in the application except when we try to assign a bus to a send on a stereo track (audio and aux). Assigning buses to mono track are fine. The above action quits PT's without a message and then by trying to re-launch (ie. without rebooting) we get the nasty multilanguage error screen (probably kernal panic) and have to do a hard boot to the system. can anyone have an idea as to why this action alone would cause such a crash? what is it about assigning a bus to a stereo track that could crash everything? In considering your response, please note that we have: 1. tried the upgrade path from 10.3.8 to 10.4 etc. and then did it again by doing a erase and install of the OS and then PT re-install etc. 2. followed all the Digi posted trouble shooting points to the letter on both of the install rounds noted above. 3. updated plugs for Tiger or removed them. 4. updated the firmware for the drives for Tiger where available. 5. Have no other softare running or installed on the system. 6. Apple diagnostic tests showed nothing wrong. 7. spend an afternoon with 2 different digi tech support people doing various troubleshooting approaches. We in the end re-installed Panther and PT to 10.3.8 and 6.9.1cs1 and have (as we had before the Tiger nightmare) the most stable system ever since we starting working with PT 5.0. we get no crashes or anything even with very large mixes. System Config in question: G5 dual 2Ghz, 4 1/2 GB Ram, Digi 64/7 expansion chassis, HD Core + 3 acel cards, 6 192's, 3 Glyph GT103 FW Chassis, 2 Lacie D2 drives. Plugs = Impact, reverb one, sound replacer, machine control, digi translator, Indigo, and other plugs = Sony Inflator and EQ, Eventide Clockworks, Waves diamond bundle

try losing the expansion chassis. run 1 HD core card only INSIDE the G5. does it work? good. add an accel card. does it work? good. remove accel #1 and install accel #2 does it work? good... etc... eliminate any possibility that the cards have failed in any way. then - it could be related to the chassis. ???

also - in your engine setup, how many chips did you allocate? when testing, go down to 1 chip, 32 voices, and test. this forces the mixer onto 1 chip. when you go to 2 or more chips and it breaks, it can indicate something not right with card-card communication.

I had a very troublesome update solved by doing a clean uninstall of 6.9.2 and 6.4, then manually trashing the DAE and Digi components in MacHD>Library>CFMSupport and MacHD>Library>Frameworks before reinstalling 6.4 and updating to 6.9.2. I'm not sure if that would help you at all, but may be worth a shot.

RE: Tiger and 6.9.2 troubleshooting issue

Hey guys, thanks for the comments, some very good suggestions. We have been very spoiled with very easy upgrades in the past that this one having such a disasterous problem makes us very skitish about doing the upgrade. We would need at least a day to do this and I don't know when that will be possible as our stuff is all rack mounted etc. To the question about how many DSP, we allocate 6/96 voices as we do everything in 96/24. Our mixes can get often over 64 tracks and we typically fill max the cards with plugs and 5 196's interfacing physical inserts for racks of outbord eq ... the system is crankin' ... months of no crashes at 10.3.8 so we are going to stay at this release ... at 6.9.1 we are back with a mix that is stretching everything with no problems so we won't try to fix what isn't broken. Will wait until 6.9.2 + gets the tires kicked more in the future months.

RE: Tiger and 6.9.2 troubleshooting issue

There is a real issue with upgraded from 6.9.1cs1 Panther to Tiger. I myself went through a four-day _ell with this one. here is what you need to do. 0. Copy all you plug in's and plug in folder setting folder to another drive location, not the say one they live at now. 1. de-install 6.9, de-install 6.7, do this from the custom window in the install options 2. Do the finder and make sure all Digi stuff is gone, totally. 3. Check this place for extensions that need to be trashed. System/library/extensions - find digidal.kext and digiO.kext 4. Trash them 5. Trash all digidata base folders and files " .ddb" on all drives you have, "all" 6. Trash your preferences, DAE pref.,Digi set up pref. 7. Repair permissions. Now Install Tiger 10.4, do the software upgrade to 10.4.2 1. Install 6.7, that's right 6.7, or 6.4 if that's all you have on disk 2. It will ask to restart, do it 3. Down load a new upgrade to 6.9, and then upload 6.9 - 6.9.2, then upload. 6.9.2.cs2 4. Restart 5. Go to library /application support/ Digidesign- add your plug in to these folders and add your plug in settings to these plug in setting folders, add your unused plug in to this unused plug in folder. Once you re boot repair permissions again. Boot Pt; inter your auth codes and your up!! Follow this and you will be fine. Luckily G 5 is fast to repair!! Good Luck

RE: Tiger and 6.9.2 troubleshooting issue

Kurtstudio, Thanks for the message. On our first upgrade approach we had to regress to 6.4 because the 6.9.2 upgrade didn't recognize 6.9.1 ... message was something like, PT version unrecognized must have 6.x version installed...' Followed all the steps you mention except moving the plugs and trashing files other than the typical prefs, good advice. I was unaware of the .kext files. I talked to a few friends and they had real trouble ... I think Digi needs to look at the upgrade process for 6.9.2. What I don't understand is why I got the identical problem even with doing a complete erase and instal of the OS and PT.
