Upgrade your Mac OS to 9.2.2 Upgrade Pro Tools to 5.1.1 Both free updates. The 9.2.2 update may give you more USB stability, which is the first thing that comes to mind from your description. Try plugging the USB devices into different ports, such as plugging the keyboard into one of the direct ports on the Mac, and the mouse into the other directly on the Mac. It could be that you aren't using the standard Apple mouse and/or keyboard, and the keyboard passive port is not sending enough power to the mouse. If that turns out to be the problem, you may need a powered USB hub if you also have more USB devices than you have powered USB ports. Another thing you need to check: Make sure your Energy Saver Control Panel is active in your extensions set, and Sleep is set to Never. Report back if any of those things apply and if they help. If not, more system details about what devices and hardware you have, and your extension set may offer some clues.
