AMD XP1600 with A7V266e board. Help!!!

Hi all, Recently I made the mistake of buying a A7A266 MOBO which I subsequently found out doesn't work with the digi001, as I would of discovered before buying it if I had only checked the forum. *sigh* Anyway the shop I bought it from finally reopened after the Christmas/New Year Holidays yesterday and I exchanged it for a A7V266e which the consensus suggests seems to be a good match with the digi. I've just spent the last 7 hours rebuilding the machine (I haven't even got up to putting in the digi001) but I'm having problems getting the machine to restart. It shuts down without any problems, it's only the restart that hangs. I've found some other refernces to this problem on other sites but I was wondering if any of the many bright sparks who post here can help me? My setup: AMD XP1600; ASUS A7V266-e; ATI Rage 128 Pro (32MB AGP Graphics Card); 2 sticks of 256MB DDR RAM; 2 x 7200RPM IDE Hard drives; Acer CD Burner. Anyway any help would be much appreciated. Cheers, Scott M

Scott, If you hit ALT-CTL-DEL, what's running before you try to restart? Strange problem... Mark

Make sure you have the latest bios on your board. That is if it is hanging up before it trys to boot from your hard drive. If it is hanging on startup of the OS then it may be a driver or such. What OS are you using? ~^KroNEe^~

Hi Scott, I have built the exact same computer through advice on this board, and trust me it works great. I'm sorry that I don't have any advice for you as I'm not that proficient regarding computer building. I just wanted to let you to know that this setup works really well with Digi001, and I'm sure that you will get the appropriate help from this board. I'm still learning. Good luck

Hi Scott, Where is it hanging? Is it before Windows boots? Can you boot it with just a bare bones setup without any other cards installed besides video?

What kind of RAM are you using? I have read a few things about people having problems with using more than one stick of cheaper RAM. Try removing one of the sticks and see if that fixes it. I have read that Crucial RAM is the best for this board and that's what I use in mine and I have no problems. I use only 1 256 meg stick. You might also try checking for updated ATI video drivers. Even try setting your display driver to "Standard VGA" and see if that fixes the problem. If it does then you need to find ATI drivers that will work for you. I have a GeForce2 MX card and for some reason I have troubles with the 21.81 drivers but the older 12.41 work great. You will have to experiment and see what works with your system. Good luck.

RE: AMD XP1600 with A7V266e board. Help!!!

Thanks everyone for your quick response, greatly appreciated. My operating system is Windows 98SE, which I've reinstalled twice to make sure that wasn't the problem. It is a bare bones system that this is happening with, ie no cards but the AGP video card. I'll try the advice regarding the RAM sticks as I do have two sticks in it. I had no problems installing the digi001 though and protools is running amazingly (I'll post the torture test results tomorrow once I've done it), except the system crashed once but I think that's related to the problems I'm having with the board and not the 001. When I Ctrl-Alt-Del before restarting it shows only three applications running...the systray; something related to the graphics card; and explorer. Thanks all. Scott M.

Sorry I forgot to specify where it hangs...it hangs before it boots from the hard drive, not while booting the OS, so I'll look for a BIOS update as well. Cheers, Scott

Scott, So you have the 001 installed and PTLE running? Congrats? Restart problems are really weird. There's another few posts around here about people that have no problems shutting down, but fail on restart. I don't understand it. Save this for later bacuase I hate to change os's, but if you can't fix it, think about upgrading to Win ME. Talk late, Mark
