Marquee unselect items?

am I being stupid? I've selected all items on track and want to unselect some of them with the marquee. To add items to the selection I press shift and then marquee them, but why doesn't this work in reverse? check the video to see what I mean:

I know! This is a really annoying one for shifting or editing lots of small items I'm gonna move this to the prerelease forum
