I've been looking at the upgrade path as well, and I'm not impressed with the lack of expansion in the G5. Not only that but you'd have to chance your system on a brand new OS (10.3) and PT version, both of which have been met with mixed results. If it ain't broke...

The G5's serial drives are extremely fast. I have had no problems with recording to them in my home studio and working with full resolution movie files. You won't have any trouble with them. I have two other studio's with Dual 1.25 G4's and Glyph SCSI's on a dual Atto card and I can't wait to upgrade them too and lose the SCSI. I think that SCSI's days are limited and I for one won't miss troubleshooting SCSI issues. I would buy a G5 rather than the G4 as the performance difference is huge. The faster buss and processor is amazing. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies guys, I've read a few other posts here about how SCSI is not happening in the G5/Panther OS. In my current state, I think I'll find the latest model dual G4 and move all my current hardware into it, plus add a Process card. I know a G5 is fast, but we're on a single G4 500MHz, so moving up to a dual 1.42GHz G4 should be a fine improvement from where we're at now. When I hear lots of success stories with firwire800 on the g5, then maybe in a year or so we'll make that jump. That way we can let SCSI go and embrace internal SATA and external Firewire for all the drive needs. Regards, Jason
I am with Jason on this. I have been trouble shooting SCSI stuff since the $4000 "4 gig' sledgehammer video drives (C64Toaster), and I am glad to see them see them become less critical, FW 800 is fast, but the trust in the hardware is hard to loose. Especially if you prefer removable storecase "style" drive setups like many people do. As a studio consultant I am telling my clients to wait. To see some more "happy" results with G5's and SCSI before any descisions are made. I say wait until second gen G5 and Ultra 320 dual channel SCSI. Wait till true PCI-X video cards and the Aurora Pipe drivers and last but not least for 10.3.x to settle. Then I think the switch to tdm g5 will be complete enough to warrent the jump from older working rigs. Lets not forget we gotta make some music. For now the G5 is an insane Native Machine that should be lightpiped into your existingTDM, but as far as replacing the main rig, it "wouldn't be prudent"
