Mixing in mono

MessageAuthor

Does anyone in reaperland use this technique. I've been using it for the past month and it really does help with levels,eq, and believe it or not panning. A most valuable technique.

RE: Mixing in mono

Monitoring partly in mono is critical to confirm mono compatibility. For that purpose I prefer one channel (preferably center) mono to two channel (same thing in L/R) mono. Using only one speaker, I have found, can also point out phase issues that can be overlooked while tracking. Not only listening for comb filtering, but the size of the sound stage in front of the speaker (Does the sound envelope the room or sound like it is only coming out of the center of the speaker cone).

RE: Mixing in mono

If you are using a non-equal power pan law you will hear the levels change :) otherwise you shouldn't hear anything....

nope - "equal power" or "constant power" pan law is -3db center. The curves also matter - true equal power requires sinusoidal curves (as sin^2 + cos^2 = 1...) If you have linear or log curves there will be some variation in the mono level.

RE: Mixing in mono

I agree... checking mixes in mono is very useful for getting the levels right. I use two JS Utility/channelmixers as my last fx on the master, with the following settings: - Dim+mono left: L->L -12dB, R->L -12dB (the other 2 are -144dB) - Dim+mono right: R->R -12dB, L->R -12dB (the other 2 are -144dB) Renamed them 'Dim+mono left' (and ...right). Normally they're bypassed, when I want to check levels I shift-click one... You can also setup a reverse left/right this way... Eddy
