Static spikes

Hello, I apologize if this issue has been beaten to death, but my search has proven fruitless so far. This is my first attempt at recording my music, so I am not as educated as I would like to be when it comes to diagnosing problems. I am currently running the trial version of Reaper to record some of my ideas through a Line6 UX2/Gearbox interface. When I am recording I will get occasional spikes of static, but they seem to happen randomly. Sometimes the static is quiet, sometimes it is loud (not a pleasant experience with headphones). It is not a constant static, but more like random blasts of noise, and it only happens during recording and play-back. The static doesn't actually record on to the track, so it is hard to recreate and impossible to capture, it just kinda 'happens' while recording or playing the track. What can be causing this? Thank you in advance.

RE: Static spikes

My guess is the buffer setting for your sound card is too low. In the upper right corner of reaper should be soundcard info, click on that and increase your buffer settings. Also check if your soundcard came with am ASIO driver by seeing if it is in the dropdown list, if not google for asio4all and try that.

RE: Static spikes

Thank you for the reply Lucian. Unfortunately, that didn't resolve the issue. The Line6 interface seems to have its own ASIO driver, since it appears in the Reaper Preferences as "ASIO UX2". Increasing the buffer size in the ASIO UX2 settings still produces the static noises, and it also seems to lag the recording... so what I hear when I'm recording doesn't match up when I play it back. I downloaded the ASIO4ALL driver, but experienced the same static issue. Increasing the buffer size for the ASIO4ALL didn't have any apparent effect on the recording (issue persisted, but no recording lag). Could it be that the Line6 interface is connecting through a USB port that is causing the issue? How do recording interfaces usually connect to the computer?

RE: Static spikes

damn, that is a bummer. I do not know other than maybe it is something with your Line6 UX2/Gearbox setup...Interesting that the static doesn't record, does it happen and you hear it in your headphones while you are actually recording or only on playback? Does it happen when you playback on your speakers or just headphones? I am thinking it could be a flakey jack? I would guess something is introducing this somewhere in your output audio path which for me usually means hardware. To rule out Reaper I would make a new project with audio only and slowly add in normal use vsts, etc or start disabling vst effects in your current project (if you are using any). The type of problems are notoriously hard to diagnose unfortunately

RE: Static spikes

I myself run POD Farm with a UX2 and for some reason if you run the Gearbox/POD Farm programs as a VST, you will get static pops and lag no matter what setting you use. Not sure why, but that has been the case the year and a half I have been using Reaper and POD Farm. I suspect its something to do with the Line 6 software. Just use it as a stand-alone and route the outputs into Reaper.
