I will need to maintain plugins and custom plugin lists on 3 different PCs. The .dll and path agnostic reference to plugin settings would be of great help. I wouldn't have to worry about filenames and paths when moving or updating the plugins (and losing settings) Example scenario... I am on my laptop and I download a plugin pack with lots of dlls (e.g. the MDA plugin pack). I make custom FX folders in Reaper and sort the plugins in categories. If I rename the MDA folder (I usually put version numbers in folders/filenames), my customizations in Reaper will be lost. If I move the MDA folder, the same. If the customizations were kept by plugin name/ID (or some other smart logic), then I would be able to set most stuff up on the laptop, and then transfer the settings on my DAW PC (which has different paths and file structure).
------------------------------------- "True peace is not merly the absence of tension: it is the presence of justice..."
Some more stuff: 1) The FX browser list takes some time (milliseconds) to populate the list with lots of plugins, when switching folders. This should at least be 'cached', at least as long the FX browser window is open? 2) This is bugging me somewhat: Offer a way to hide the plugins from the main list, that have already been placed in custom folders. Because it's a lot harder to organize stuff when you see everything all the time.
Adding my +1 to a complete revamp of the FX Browser/Organising Plugins issue...this one REALLY, REALLY, REALLY needs to be addressed! If I'm not mistaken, (and I often am), this is the only feature that hasn't been developed since Reaper 1.x! It represents a big stumbling block for many users to make the full transition over to Reaper, and in all honesty it is the ONLY thing I miss about other DAWs. Many users, and especially potential converts, are using other DAWs so compatibility is the key to a successful trial/conversion. To my mind, it's the only thing that Reaper fails in...but it is a big failure :( For me, the ideal would be to implement this popular FR asap:-- I hope I'm not sounding like a spoilt child, (I have the utmost respect for the Reaper Devs, I am the proud owner of a licence and I'm a Reaper evangelist), but I passionately feel that the FX Browser needs a complete overhaul to allow for a proper and consistent organisation of plugins, (which is compatible across platforms)! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE consider this request Devs...even if only for the commercial value it will add ;)
...right now when I want to insert an instrument or an effect, I first lookup my VST folder structure in windows explorer, there I decide which one I would like to use, memorize the DLL filename, go back to Reaper, type in DLL name in the filter input box, and finally I double-click on the FX name to insert it. Phew!
