Hi Forum I'm looking at buying a xc90 but really need to know if this is possible. We currently have a 2 year old daughter and my wife is expecting twins. I wondering if anyone's has put 2 newborn baby car seats and an infant seat on the 2nd row of the xc90?? also if this is possible as anyone had 3 infant seats on the 2nd row, I dont want to have change the car after a year when they are all in infant seats. could you also include the makes and models of the seats you've fitted. thank you for your time Andy
RE: Can you fit 3 childs seats in the 2nd row of a xc90??
Hi Andy, First of all, I am sure that there is enough physical space in the second row. However, although I only need two child seats, I wanted to put one in the middle to make it possible to access the rear row without putting a child seat in the rear row (where it does actually fit quite well). My general findings were that an infant carrier is not suitable for the middle seat. This applied both to the information from Volvo and from manufacturers like Britax who have comprehensive fitting guidelines on their sites. If I remember correctly, it is theoretically permitted to put a child seat in the middle position (i.e. for ages 1-4 ish). However, I found that ours wouldn't sit properly due to the size and shape of that seat (or the size and shape of the car seat). It is a Mamas and Papas seat, but can't remember which model. So the twins' infant carriers would be fine in the outboard positions, but I think it would be a case of simply checking specific models to see if your existing seat or an alternative would fit in the middle. My personal feeling is that it might be difficult to find a seat that really sits properly, due to the relatively narrow middle seat. Cheers, Kevin

My experience with baby seats is that they have a large base and I haven't seen one that would alow three to fit in the second row. You can get two in the third row though. Your wife could sit in one seat in the second row with one baby seat in the second row and two in the third row, until they got big enough to fit the Volvo built in seat. I'd recommend using the comfort upholstery to give neck support though. It's an accessory. Make sure you get a car with the rear seat entertainment kit as well. Kids love it on long journeys. Congratulations by the way. All the best. Roy

To come back to Andy's original question :) 3 full size seats will not fit at 2nd row. The middle seat is too small to fit a full size. This is one of the reasons why I previously had people carriers (Peu 807 and Ford Galaxy) as they have 3 full size seats.

The 807 actuall scored really high in Ncap tests, 5 stars front impact and also very good at side impact. It comes standard with all the seat and curtain airbags. As they are high off the ground this will add extra safety as in a side impact the chassis of the car will take most of the impact rather than the door itself. Next to that the seat configuration is far more flexible than the XC and can even take all 5 rear seats out to make a gigantic load-lugger. I agree that (almost) nothing is as safe as an XC90, but a very good alternative... Btw, I checked today and can only see the Isofix mark on the 2 outer seats of the XC, is this correct?
