RE: 002 Minimum Computer Success

The new PC is not an option right now but I'm still undecided about the 002 or 001. I just wanted to know if there were any users that were using PIII systems and having success. My system is: 8000mHz PIII 512 meg RAM External 7200 RPM Firewire Drive (for audio) Any help is very much appreciated.

I would recommend the 002: great control surface great plugin bundle beautiful pre's that kill the 001's I'm not sure if you'll score highly on the DaveC test, but one thing's for certain, the I/O running through the firewire relieves almost all possible strain on the pci bus. You also have the possibility of easily using it with a laptop in the future. If it were me, and I had a budget of ~$2,500, I think I'd still go for a new cpu, mobo, and ram, a digimax, and a 001. If you did this, it would blow away anything running on your current comp out of the water.

RE: 002 Minimum Computer Success

It probably will work. And will work nicely with a good trackcount. The problem is with plugins. They are the real cpu-hogs.... Before this pc i had a PIII 600 mhz with a digi001, and i was able to playback 24 channels without problems...but i really had to stretch it to get to run some waves L1 plugins and some dverbs.... Fed up with this....i bought myself a new mobo, processor and memory for around 300 euro's. This turned my system into an AMD athlon XP 1700+ with ABIT KR7A-R mobo (raid disabled from bios; RAID does not work with ptle...)

RE: 002 Minimum Computer Success

Sorry stone, didn't mean to offend, I should say that the pci thing never really made sense to me either, but I DO see a big difference in the system usage meter, if any serious techies could enlighten me as to why, I would appreciate it. I agree with you on the mackie control as well, I use the HUI on the TDM system and am now having to become a subtle finger dancer when it comes to memorizing keyboard shortcuts and their differences from mac to pc (as our mac and pt upgrade has rendered the tdm studio midi-less for a short time) Perhaps "kill" was too strong a word. I personally have no problem with the 001 pres and they see alot of use when I'm on a 001 rig. (I DO LIKE THE 001 PRES, SERIOUSLY!) My personal preference of the 002 pres may have more to do with the converters than the pres themselves, but I really haven't done a side by side with the line ins yet to see. Certainly a very small percentage could ever hear the difference, especially over the air waves. chence, In the end, however, it is true that a 001 has been proven with your particular computer. Digi doesn't exactly come out and support the PIII in their compatibility list for the 002.
