Good buy on a high mileage 2001 S40?

Hello, everyone. I am new to the boards, so please accept my apologies if this is posted in the wrong location. I am in the U.S. and I am looking at a 2001 S40 with 145,000 miles on it. The vehicle is for sale for $4995 U.S. at a reputable dealer and previously had just one owner. This S40 has the 1.9 liter turbo engine (I believe that this is the only variety that was sold over here). Since this model of the S40 had already been well established in the U.K. and Europe before being sold here, I am curious to hear how durable these vehicles have been. Has anyone managed over 200,000 miles or more? I put about 30,000 miles per year on my cars. I have over 235,000 on my 1994 850 estate, but I do not know if the S40 has the same potential longevity. Oh--my wife is from Uddingston, outside Glasgow, and she sends a hello to all you Scottish Volvo fans out there!

Hi bob850 & welcome to the forum. Does the S40 you are interested in have the GDI engine? If it has I personally would not have it, not sure about the longlivety of the other S40 models but the GDI has a poor reputation.

Hi Bob, Greetings from accross the big pond. Haven't heard of anything negative about the S-40 ... I would imagine that, judging by how many of them are used as Taxi's here, that they should run and run. Regarding the longer - term prognosis, I'd be more inclined to worry about electronic gizmos going funny than mechanical failure! The only thing I've ever heard of is, on earlier models ( 96+ ) premature wear of the front shock absorbers which was ironed out well before '01. Personally I'd see a 150,000 mile Volvo as being just 'run in'. I'd worry only about whether the timing belt is due replacement. Best of luck. Anthony.
